Entering the Rappahannock River we passed this beautiful Deltaville Chesapeake Deadrise vessel. Designed in the 1880s this style craft has been in use on the Bay ever since. Her large cockpit and shallow draft is perfect for the Chesapeake.. Watermen on the Bay use them to fish for rockfish or eel or dredge for clam and oysters. Many are used for recreational purposes as well. Though originally crafted from wood; modern deadrise boats are fiberglass and have all the contemporary bells and whistles. Pretty isn’t she?
